Georgian Young Lawyers' Association became a finalist of the Vaclav Havel Human Rights Competition held by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. The price is awarded to a person or organization for distinguished service in human rights’ field. Human rights organizations operating in Europe and other countries are eligible to participate in the competition.
On August 26, the competition commission announced three finalists: Ales Beliatski, a human rights defender from Belarus, "Human Rights Protection Network" operating in Czech Republic and the Georgian Young Lawyers' Association. The final session of the competition commission will be held on September 29 in Strasbourg and the winner will be determined there. It will be announced by the head of the Parliamentary Assembly at 12:30 on September 30. Afterwards awards ceremony will follow and Vaclav Havel library will conduct an international conference in honor of the winner.
To be among finalists is a great success for GYLA notwithstanding who will be the winner of the competition. We would like to express gratitude to all supporter organizations and individuals who give to GYLA high evaluation. It is on the one hand appraisal of organizations’ operation that makes us proud and on the other hand great responsibility which obliges us to do our best for protection of human rights.
