A group of non-governmental organizations has launched "This Affects You " Campaign against illegal eavesdropping and surveillance. The campaign aims to change the existing practice of eavesdropping and surveillance by law enforcement agencies in Georgia and to bring the law in line with the Georgian Constitution and the best practice of European countries.

Mebmers of the Campaign “It Affects You Too, Authorities Continue to Eavsdrop on Us” welcome the March 6 statement of the Ministry of Interior Alexander Chikaidze in terms of the readiness of the agency to have a dialogue with the civil society representatives on the problematic issue of secret eavesdropping and surveillance. Further, the Minister mentioned that it would be acceptable to consolidate the interests of the Ministry of Interior and Citizens of Georgia.

NGOs call on Tbilisi Local Council and Tbilisi City Hall for Cooperation

Over the past three months approval of Tbilisi budget has become the issue of hot controversy between the majority of the City Council and Tbilisi City Hall and its supporter minority. According to the Georgian Legislation, unless the City Council approves the municipal budget within three months after adoption of the draft state budget, the government with the consensus of the Parliament of Georgia makes a resolution on pre-term termination of the authority of the City Council and introduction of the direct state governance.

Civil Campaign against Illegal Eavesdropping: It Affects You Too, Authorities Continue to Eavesdrop on Us!

Unrestricted secret eavesdropping by the law enforcement authorities has been a serious issue in Georgia for years already. The investigation authorities had been eavesdropping and carrying out surveillance on ordinary Georgian citizens, journalists, civil society representatives, political activists, defense lawyers, clerics and other persons for years, without any oversight and permission.

GYLA Challenges the Rule of Inadmissibility of Evidences in the Constitutional Court

GYLA lodged a lawsuit in the Constitutional Court and challenged constitutionality of the Criminal Procedure norm, which considers inadmissible only the evidences obtained in violation of requirements of the Criminal Procedure Code, while it regards admissible evidences obtains in violation of other laws.

Criminal Justice Reform Alliance of Georgia Releases the Statement about the Death of a Prisoner in Geguti #14 Penitentiary

 As reported, on March 4, 2014 at about 2:30 a.m. an inmate died in Geguti #14 penitentiary as a result of confrontation  between  prisoners. The incident happened in a cell with five inmates there.    According to the initial information, the deceased prisoner has numerous injuries, including in the area of head and a throat. The exact cause of death will be known after conduct of examination. Investigation has been launched on the case.
