The Civil Cases Panel of Tbilisi City Court admitted Professor Iago Kachkachishvili’s claim, which concerns denying of the spread information, the establishment of the fact of oppression and ordering its termination, as well as the compensation of a symbolic amount, one GEL, for moral damages. The defendants in the dispute are LEPL-Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, rector of the university and members of the Ethics Commission established by the decree of the rector of the university.
As it is known to the public, putting the pressure on Iago Kachkachishvili and the creation of a hostile environment at work began after he exposed Giorgi Sharvashidze, the rector of the university, to plagiarism.
In response to the exposure to plagiarism, on April 13, 2020, a special commission consisting of 7 members was established by the decree of the rector, which was instructed to study Iago Kachkachisvhili’s doctoral thesis. The commission prepared a conclusion on August 23, 2020, in which it found a “violation of scientific conscientiousness” in the work of Iago Kachkachisvhili.
In the lawsuit filed in court, Iago Kachkachishvili claims that the conclusion of the commission contains substantially false facts. Nevertheless, it became available to the Academic Council of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and afterwards-was widespread through the media. This damaged Iago Kachkachishvili’s business reputation and academic conscientiousness, which is a significant loss for him as a conscientious professor employed in academic field.
Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association defends the interests of Professor Iago Kachkachisvhili in the court.
