GYLA applied to the UNESCO concerning the pending amendments to the law on “Cultural Heritage”

As it is known to public, the government of Georgia submitted to the Parliament the draft which introduces amendment to the law on Cultural Heritage and changes significantly applied regulation on cancelation of the status to the monument.

According to the legislative initiative, Paragraph 2 will be added to Article 17, according to which –  in exceptional cases, in case of state necessities, removal of the status to the monument (save for those having national category or/and being in the list of the world heritage)is possible upon agreement with the Ministry, on the basis of the government resolution, by submission of the entity authorized to initiate the draft of the legal act before the government

Initiation of the draft to the Parliament caused negative reaction among the significant part of the society. Although number of meetings were held on different levels in terms of the  risks associated with the draft, regretfully the draft remains in the Parliament for examination.

Today, GYLA applied to the UNESCO in terms of the challenges and possible negative outcomes associated with the draft.
